And the Moabites were sore afraid of the people, because they were many, and Moab [a]fretted against the children of Israel.

Therefore Moab said unto the [b]Elders of Midian, Now shall this multitude lick up all that are round about us, as an ox licketh up the grass of the field: and Balak the son of Zippor was King of the Moabites at that time.

(A)He sent messengers therefore unto Balaam the son of Beor to Pethor (which is by the [c]river of the land of the children of his folk) to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out of Egypt, which cover the face of the earth, and lie over against me.

and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread(A) because of the Israelites.

The Moabites(B) said to the elders of Midian,(C) “This horde is going to lick up everything(D) around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.(E)

So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,(F) who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,(G) in his native land. Balak said:

“A people has come out of Egypt;(H) they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me.
