29 (A)your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all (B)your [a]numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me. 30 Surely you shall not come into the land in which I [b]swore to settle you, (C)except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 (D)Your children, however, whom you said would become a prey—I will bring them in, and they will know the land which you have rejected. 32 (E)But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your sons shall be shepherds for (F)forty years in the wilderness, and they will [c]suffer for your [d]unfaithfulness, until your corpses [e]lie in the wilderness. 34 According to the (G)number of days which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day you shall bear your [f]guilt a year, even forty years, and you will know My opposition. 35 (H)I, the Lord, have spoken, surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who are gathered together against Me. In this wilderness they shall be destroyed, and there they will die.’”

36 (I)As for the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land and who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing out a bad report concerning the land, 37 even (J)those men who brought out the very bad report of the land died by a (K)plague before the Lord. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.

Israel Repulsed

39 When Moses spoke (L)these words to all the sons of Israel, (M)the people mourned greatly. 40 In the morning, however, they rose up early and went up to the [g]ridge of the hill country, saying, “(N)Here we are; [h]we have indeed sinned, but we will go up to the place which the Lord has promised.” 41 But Moses said, “(O)Why then are you transgressing the [i]commandment of the Lord, when it will not succeed? 42 (P)Do not go up, or you will be struck down before your enemies, for the Lord is not among you. 43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turned back from following the Lord. And the Lord will not be with you.” 44 But they went up heedlessly to the [j]ridge of the hill country; neither (Q)the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses left the camp. 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down, and struck them and beat them down as far as (R)Hormah.

29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall(A)—every one of you twenty years old or more(B) who was counted in the census(C) and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land(D) I swore with uplifted hand(E) to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh(F) and Joshua son of Nun.(G) 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected.(H) 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall(I) in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years,(J) suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years(K)—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land(L)—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things(M) to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.(N)

36 So the men Moses had sent(O) to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble(P) against him by spreading a bad report(Q) about it— 37 these men who were responsible for spreading the bad report(R) about the land were struck down and died of a plague(S) before the Lord. 38 Of the men who went to explore the land,(T) only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.(U)

39 When Moses reported this(V) to all the Israelites, they mourned(W) bitterly. 40 Early the next morning they set out for the highest point in the hill country,(X) saying, “Now we are ready to go up to the land the Lord promised. Surely we have sinned!(Y)

41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!(Z) 42 Do not go up, because the Lord is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies,(AA) 43 for the Amalekites(AB) and the Canaanites(AC) will face you there. Because you have turned away from the Lord, he will not be with you(AD) and you will fall by the sword.”

44 Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up(AE) toward the highest point in the hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the Lord’s covenant moved from the camp.(AF) 45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites(AG) who lived in that hill country(AH) came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.(AI)
