¹⁰ Moses heard the people of every family wailing^(A) at the entrance to their tents. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled.

³³ But while the meat was still between their teeth^(A) and before it could be consumed, the anger^(B) of the Lord burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.^(C)

¹⁰ The Lord’s anger was aroused^(A) that day and he swore this oath:^{(B) 11} ‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of those who were twenty years old or more^(C) when they came up out of Egypt^(D) will see the land I promised on oath^(E) to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob^(F)— ¹² not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the Lord wholeheartedly.’^{(G) 13} The Lord’s anger burned against Israel^(H) and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone.^(I)

¹⁵ for the Lord your God^(A), who is among you, is a jealous God and his anger will burn against you, and he will destroy you from the face of the land.

Achan’s Sin

7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things^[a];^(A) Achan^(B) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,^[b] the son of Zerah,^(C) of the tribe of Judah,^(D) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned^(E) against Israel.^(F)
