Jesus Is Crucified^(A)

³² As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus' cross. ³³ They came to a place called Golgotha, which means, “The Place of the Skull.” ^34 (B)There they offered Jesus wine mixed with a bitter substance; but after tasting it, he would not drink it.

^35 (C)They crucified him and then divided his clothes among them by throwing dice. ³⁶ After that they sat there and watched him. ³⁷ Above his head they put the written notice of the accusation against him: “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” ³⁸ Then they crucified two bandits with Jesus, one on his right and the other on his left.

^39 (D)People passing by shook their heads and hurled insults at Jesus: ^40 (E)“You were going to tear down the Temple and build it back up in three days! Save yourself if you are God's Son! Come on down from the cross!”

⁴¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the Law and the elders made fun of him: ⁴² “He saved others, but he cannot save himself! Isn't he the king of Israel? If he will come down off the cross now, we will believe in him! ^43 (F)He trusts in God and claims to be God's Son. Well, then, let us see if God wants to save him now!”

⁴⁴ Even the bandits who had been crucified with him insulted him in the same way.

Jesus Is Crucified^(A)

²⁶ The soldiers led Jesus away, and as they were going, they met a man from Cyrene named Simon who was coming into the city from the country. They seized him, put the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus.

²⁷ A large crowd of people followed him; among them were some women who were weeping and wailing for him. ²⁸ Jesus turned to them and said, “Women of Jerusalem! Don't cry for me, but for yourselves and your children. ²⁹ For the days are coming when people will say, ‘How lucky are the women who never had children, who never bore babies, who never nursed them!’ ^30 (B)That will be the time when people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Hide us!’ ³¹ For if such things as these are done when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

³² Two other men, both of them criminals, were also led out to be put to death with Jesus. ³³ When they came to the place called “The Skull,” they crucified Jesus there, and the two criminals, one on his right and the other on his left. ^34 (C)Jesus said, “Forgive them, Father! They don't know what they are doing.”^[a]

They divided his clothes among themselves by throwing dice. ^35 (D)The people stood there watching while the Jewish leaders made fun of him: “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah whom God has chosen!”

^36 (E)The soldiers also made fun of him: they came up to him and offered him cheap wine, ³⁷ and said, “Save yourself if you are the king of the Jews!”

³⁸ Above him were written these words: “This is the King of the Jews.”

³⁹ One of the criminals hanging there hurled insults at him: “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”

⁴⁰ The other one, however, rebuked him, saying, “Don't you fear God? You received the same sentence he did. ⁴¹ Ours, however, is only right, because we are getting what we deserve for what we did; but he has done no wrong.” ⁴² And he said to Jesus, “Remember me, Jesus, when you come as King!”

⁴³ Jesus said to him, “I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me.”

¹⁷ He went out, carrying his cross, and came to “The Place of the Skull,” as it is called. (In Hebrew it is called “Golgotha.”) ¹⁸ There they crucified him; and they also crucified two other men, one on each side, with Jesus between them. ¹⁹ Pilate wrote a notice and had it put on the cross. “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” is what he wrote. ²⁰ Many people read it, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city. The notice was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. ²¹ The chief priests said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am the King of the Jews.’”

²² Pilate answered, “What I have written stays written.”

²³ After the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier. They also took the robe, which was made of one piece of woven cloth without any seams in it. ^24 (A)The soldiers said to one another, “Let's not tear it; let's throw dice to see who will get it.” This happened in order to make the scripture come true:

And this is what the soldiers did.

²⁵ Standing close to Jesus' cross were his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there; so he said to his mother, “He is your son.”

²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “She is your mother.” From that time the disciple took her to live in his home.
