Wind and Wave Obey the Master

²³ As He got into the^[a] boat,^(A) His disciples^(B) followed Him. ²⁴ Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But He was sleeping. ²⁵ So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

²⁶ But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea.^(C) And there was a great calm.

²⁷ The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?—even the winds and the sea obey^(D) Him!”

³⁶ So they left the crowd and took Him along since He was already in the boat. And other boats were with Him. ³⁷ A fierce windstorm^(A) arose, and the waves^(B) were breaking over the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. ³⁸ But He was in the stern, sleeping^(C) on the cushion. So they woke Him up^(D) and said to Him, “Teacher! Don’t You care that we’re going to die?”^(E)

³⁹ He got up, rebuked^(F) the wind, and said to the sea, “Silence!^(G) Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. ⁴⁰ Then He said to them, “Why are you fearful?^(H) Do you still have no faith?”

⁴¹ And they were terrified^(I) and asked one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and the sea obey^(J) Him!”^(K)

The Fifth Sign: Walking on Water

¹⁶ When^(A) evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, ¹⁷ got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.^(B) Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. ¹⁸ Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. ¹⁹ After they had rowed about three or four miles,^[a] they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid.

²⁰ But He said to them, “It is I.^[b](C) Don’t be afraid!” ²¹ Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.
