Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard.^(A) A servant approached him and she said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”

⁷⁰ But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

⁷¹ When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”^(B)

⁷² And again he denied it with an oath,^(C) “I don’t know the man!”

⁷³ After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter, “You certainly are one of them, since even your accent^[a] gives you away.”

⁷⁴ Then he started to curse^[b] and to swear with an oath, “I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed, ⁷⁵ and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”^(D) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Peter Denies His Lord

⁶⁶ While^(A) Peter^(B) was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest’s servants came. ⁶⁷ When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with that Nazarene,^(C) Jesus.”

⁶⁸ But he denied it: “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about!” Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed.^[a]

⁶⁹ When the servant saw him again she began to tell those standing nearby, “This man is one of them!”

⁷⁰ But again he denied it. After a little while those standing there said to Peter again, “You certainly are one of them, since you’re also a Galilean!”^[b](D)

⁷¹ Then he started to curse^[c] and to swear with an oath,^(E) “I don’t know this man you’re talking about!”

⁷² Immediately a rooster crowed a second time,^(F) and Peter remembered when Jesus had spoken the word to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” When he thought about it, he began to weep.^[d]

¹⁶ But Peter remained standing outside by the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the girl who was the doorkeeper and brought Peter in.

¹⁷ Then the slave girl who was the doorkeeper said to Peter, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?”

“I am not!” he said. ¹⁸ Now the slaves and the temple police had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold. They were standing there warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, warming himself.

Peter Denies Jesus Twice More

²⁵ Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said to him, “You aren’t one of His disciples too, are you?”

He denied it and said, “I am not!”

²⁶ One of the high priest’s slaves, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, “Didn’t I see you with Him in the garden?”

²⁷ Peter then denied it again. Immediately a rooster crowed.^(A)
