²¹ While they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”^(A)

²² Deeply distressed, each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

²³ He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with me in the bowl—he will betray me. ²⁴ The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him,^(B) but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”

¹⁸ While they were reclining and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

¹⁹ They began to be distressed and to say to him one by one, “Surely not I?”

²⁰ He said to them, “It is one of the Twelve—the one who is dipping bread in the bowl with me. ²¹ For the Son of Man^(A) will go just as it is written^(B) about him,^(C) but woe^(D) to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.”

¹⁸ “I’m not speaking about all of you; I know those I have chosen.^(A) But the Scripture^(B) must be fulfilled: ^(C) The one who eats my bread^[a] has raised his heel against me.^{[b](D) 19} I am telling you now before it happens,^(E) so that when it does happen you will believe^(F) that I am he.^{(G) 20} Truly I tell you, whoever receives anyone I send receives me, and the one who receives^(H) me receives him who sent me.”

Judas’s Betrayal Predicted

²¹ When^(I) Jesus had said this, he was troubled in his spirit^(J) and testified,^(K) “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.”

²² The disciples started looking at one another—uncertain which one he was speaking about. ²³ One of his disciples, the one Jesus loved,^(L) was reclining close beside Jesus.^{[c] 24} Simon Peter motioned to him to find out who it was he was talking about. ²⁵ So he leaned back against Jesus and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

²⁶ Jesus replied, “He’s the one I give the piece of bread to after I have dipped it.”^(M) When he had dipped the bread,^(N) he gave it to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son.^[d]
