The Passover with the Disciples^(A)

¹⁷ On the first day of the Festival^[a] of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?”

¹⁸ He said, “Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.”’”^{[b] 19} So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

²⁰ When evening came, Jesus^[c] was sitting at the table with the Twelve.^{[d] 21} While they were eating, he said, “I tell all of you^[e] with certainty, one of you is going to betray me.”

²² Feeling deeply distressed, each one began to ask him, “Surely I am not the one, Lord?”

²³ He replied, “The man who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. ²⁴ The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him. How terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”

²⁵ Then Judas, who was going to betray him, asked, “Rabbi,^[f] I’m not the one, am I?”

Jesus^[g] told him, “You have said so.”

The Passover with the Disciples^(A)

¹² On the first day of the Festival^[a] of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, Jesus’^[b] disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover meal?”

¹³ He sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a jug of water. Follow him. ¹⁴ When he goes into a house,^[c] say to its owner that the Teacher asks, ‘Where is my room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?’ ¹⁵ Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished and ready. Get everything ready for us there.” ¹⁶ So the disciples left and went into the city. They found everything just as Jesus^[d] had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal.

¹⁷ When evening came, Jesus^[e] arrived with the Twelve. ¹⁸ While they were at the table eating, Jesus said, “I tell all of you^[f] with certainty, one of you is going to betray me, one who is eating with me.”

¹⁹ They began to be very sad and asked him, one after the other, “Surely I am not the one, am I?”

²⁰ He told them, “It’s one of you Twelve, the one who is dipping his bread into the bowl with me. ²¹ For the Son of Man is going away, just as it has been written about him, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had never been born.”

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal^(A)

²¹ After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled in spirit and declared solemnly, “Truly, I tell all of you^[a] emphatically, one of you is going to betray me!” ²² The disciples began looking at one another, completely mystified about whom he was speaking. ²³ One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus kept loving, had been sitting very close to him.

²⁴ So Simon Peter motioned to this man to ask Jesus about whom he was speaking. ²⁵ Leaning forward on Jesus’ chest, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

²⁶ Jesus answered, “He is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish.”^[b]

Then he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.^{[c] 27} After he had taken the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus told him, “Do quickly what you are going to do!” ²⁸ Now no one at the table knew why Jesus^[d] said this to him. ²⁹ Some thought that, since Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the destitute. ³⁰ So Judas^[e] took the piece of bread, immediately went outside…and it was night.
