Troubles and Persecutions(A)

(B)As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private. “Tell us when all this will be,” they asked, “and what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and the end of the age.”

Jesus answered, “Watch out, and do not let anyone fool you. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will fool many people. You are going to hear the noise of battles close by and the news of battles far away; but do not be troubled. Such things must happen, but they do not mean that the end has come. (C)Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere. All these things are like the first pains of childbirth.

(D)“Then you will be arrested and handed over to be punished and be put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. 10 Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will appear and fool many people. 12 Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold. 13 (E)But whoever holds out to the end will be saved. 14 And this Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through all the world for a witness to all people; and then the end will come.

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,(A) the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming(B) and of the end of the age?”(C)

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.(D) For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.(E) You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(F) There will be famines(G) and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted(H) and put to death,(I) and you will be hated by all nations because of me.(J) 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets(K) will appear and deceive many people.(L) 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(M) 14 And this gospel of the kingdom(N) will be preached in the whole world(O) as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Troubles and Persecutions(A)

(B)“Teacher,” they asked, “when will this be? And what will happen in order to show that the time has come for it to take place?”

Jesus said, “Watch out; don't be fooled. Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time has come!’ But don't follow them. Don't be afraid when you hear of wars and revolutions; such things must happen first, but they do not mean that the end is near.”

10 He went on to say, “Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. 11 There will be terrible earthquakes, famines, and plagues everywhere; there will be strange and terrifying things coming from the sky. 12 Before all these things take place, however, you will be arrested and persecuted; you will be handed over to be tried in synagogues and be put in prison; you will be brought before kings and rulers for my sake. 13 This will be your chance to tell the Good News. 14 (C)Make up your minds ahead of time not to worry about how you will defend yourselves, 15 because I will give you such words and wisdom that none of your enemies will be able to refute or contradict what you say. 16 You will be handed over by your parents, your brothers, your relatives, and your friends; and some of you will be put to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me. 18 But not a single hair from your heads will be lost. 19 Stand firm, and you will save yourselves.

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(A) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(B) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(C)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(D) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(E) 15 For I will give you(F) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(G) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(H) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(I) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(J)
