²⁵ Jesus called them over and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. ²⁶ It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,^{(A) 27} and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave; ²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,^(B) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”^(C)

⁵ They do everything^[a] to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries^(A) and lengthen their tassels.^{[b](B) 6} They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,^{(C) 7} greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.

⁸ “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher,^[c] and you are all brothers and sisters.^{(D) 9} Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.^{(E) 10} You are not to be called instructors either, because you have one Instructor, the Messiah. ¹¹ The greatest among you will be your servant.^{(F) 12} Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.^(G)

² Shepherd God’s flock among you,^(A) not overseeing^[a] out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you;^[b] not out of greed for money but eagerly; ³ not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

⁹ Anyone who does not remain in Christ’s teaching^(A) but goes beyond it does not have God.^(B) The one who remains^(C) in that teaching, this one has both the Father^(D) and the Son.^(E)
