4 and when they come from the market-place, they do not eat unless they wash.[a] And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as (A)the washing of (B)cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.[b]) 5 And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (C)the tradition of (D)the elders, (E)but eat with (F)defiled hands?” 6 And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (G)hypocrites, as it is written,
(H)“‘This people honours me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;

4 When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])(A)
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(B) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
