18 For John was saying to Herod that “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother”. 19 And Herodias was hostile[a] to him and wanting to kill him, and was not being able. 20 For Herod was fearing John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. And he was protecting him. And having heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and-yet he was listening-to him with-pleasure.

New International Version
18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.”(A) 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man.(B) When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[a]; yet he liked to listen to him.
