The Last Supper^(A)(B)

¹² On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,^(C) Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”

¹³ So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. ¹⁴ Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹⁵ He will show you a large room upstairs,^(D) furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”

¹⁶ The disciples left, went into the city and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

¹⁷ When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. ¹⁸ While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”

¹⁹ They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”

²⁰ “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.^{(E) 21} The Son of Man^(F) will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”

⁷ Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.^{(F) 8} Jesus sent Peter and John,^(G) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

⁹ “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

¹⁰ He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, ¹¹ and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ ¹² He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

¹³ They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.^(H) So they prepared the Passover.

¹⁴ When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles^(I) reclined at the table.^(J)

²¹ But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.^{(A) 22} The Son of Man^(B) will go as it has been decreed.^(C) But woe to that man who betrays him!” ²³ They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

²¹ They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida^(A) in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” ²² Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

²³ Jesus replied, “The hour^(B) has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.^{(C) 24} Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,^(D) it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. ²⁵ Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it^(E) for eternal life.^{(F) 26} Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be.^(G) My Father will honor the one who serves me.

²⁷ “Now my soul is troubled,^(H) and what shall I say? ‘Father,^(I) save me from this hour’?^(J) No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. ²⁸ Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven,^(K) “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” ²⁹ The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

³⁰ Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit,^(L) not mine.
