²⁴When^[a] John’s messengers had gone, Jesus^[b] began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness^[c] to see? A reed shaken by the wind?^[d] ²⁵What^[e] did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing?^[f] Look, those who wear soft clothing and live in luxury^[g] are in the royal palaces!^[h] ²⁶What did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more^[i] than a prophet. ²⁷This is the one about whom it is written, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,^[j] who will prepare your way before you.’^[k]

Either view is possible, but the following examples suggest the question should be read literally, meaning that an extraordinary event like the arrival of a prophet (rather than the common occurrence of plants blowing in the wind) drew them to the desert.
