¹⁷ This is a permanent statute^(A) throughout your generations, wherever you live: you must not eat any fat or any blood.”^(B)

²⁰ But the one who eats meat from the Lord’s fellowship sacrifice while he is unclean,^[a] that person must be cut off from his people.^(A)

Eating Blood and Carcasses Prohibited

¹⁰ “Anyone from the house of Israel or from the foreigners who live among them who eats any blood,^(A) I will turn^[a] against that person who eats blood and cut him off from his people. ¹¹ For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have appointed it to you to make atonement on the altar for^[b] your lives, since it is the lifeblood that makes atonement.^{(B) 12} Therefore I say to the Israelites: None of you and no foreigner who lives among you may eat blood.

¹³ “Any Israelite or foreigner living among them, who hunts^(C) down a wild animal or bird that may be eaten must drain its blood^(D) and cover it with dirt. ¹⁴ Since the life of every creature is its blood, I have told the Israelites: You must not eat the blood of any creature,^(E) because the life of every creature is its blood; whoever eats it must be cut off.

¹⁵ “Every person, whether the native or the foreigner,^(F) who eats an animal that died a natural death or was mauled by wild beasts^(G) is to wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will remain unclean until evening; then he will be clean. ¹⁶ But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe himself, he will bear his punishment.”

²⁶ “You are not to eat anything with blood in it.^[a](A) You are not to practice divination^(B) or sorcery.^(C)

¹⁶ but you must not eat the blood; pour it on the ground like water.^(A)

²³ But don’t eat the blood, since the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat.

³⁴ He then said, “Go among the troops and say to them, ‘Each man must bring me his ox or his sheep. Do the slaughtering here and then you can eat. Don’t sin against the Lord by eating meat with the blood in it.’” So every one of the troops brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there.

²⁰ but instead we should write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality,^(A) from eating anything that has been strangled, and from blood.
