And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of (A)Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired (B)worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. And he went to his father's house at (C)Ophrah (D)and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all (E)Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.

They gave him seventy shekels[a] of silver from the temple of Baal-Berith,(A) and Abimelek used it to hire reckless scoundrels,(B) who became his followers. He went to his father’s home in Ophrah and on one stone murdered his seventy brothers,(C) the sons of Jerub-Baal. But Jotham,(D) the youngest son of Jerub-Baal, escaped by hiding.(E) Then all the citizens of Shechem and Beth Millo(F) gathered beside the great tree(G) at the pillar in Shechem to crown Abimelek king.
