¹⁹ Gideon replied, “Those were my brothers, the sons of my own mother. As surely as the Lord lives,^(A) if you had spared their lives, I would not kill you.”

³⁹ As surely as the Lord who rescues Israel lives,^(A) even if the guilt lies with my son Jonathan,^(B) he must die.”^(C) But not one of them said a word.

⁴⁵ But the men said to Saul, “Should Jonathan die—he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the Lord lives, not a hair^(A) of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help.” So the men rescued^(B) Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

⁹ David answered Rekab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered^(A) me out of every trouble,

²⁹ The king then took an oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble,^(A)

²⁴ And now, as surely as the Lord lives—he who has established me securely on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised^(A)—Adonijah shall be put to death today!”

¹⁴ “However, the days are coming,”^(A) declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’^{(B) 15} but it will be said, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north^(C) and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’^(D) For I will restore^(E) them to the land I gave their ancestors.^(F)
