Judges 5:6-8
International Standard Version
6 During the lifetime of Anath’s son Shamgar
and during the lifetime of Jael
highways remained deserted,
while travelers kept to back roads.
7 Rural populations plummeted[a] in Israel;
until I, Deborah, arose;
until I—an Israeli mother—arose.
8 New gods were chosen,
then war came to the city[b] gates,
but there wasn’t a shield or spear to be seen
among 40,000 soldiers[c] of Israel.

travelers took to winding paths.(D)
7 Villagers in Israel would not fight;
they held back until I, Deborah,(E) arose,
until I arose, a mother in Israel.
8 God chose new leaders(F)
when war came to the city gates,(G)
but not a shield or spear(H) was seen
among forty thousand in Israel.
