2 (A)Ye also shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land, (B)but shall break down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice. Why have ye done this?
3 Wherefore, I said also, I will not cast them out before you, but they shall be (C)as thorns unto your sides, and their gods shall be your [a]destruction.
4 And when the Angel of the Lord spake these words unto all the children of Israel, the people lifted up their voice, and wept.

New International Version
2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land,(A) but you shall break down their altars.(B)’ Yet you have disobeyed(C) me. Why have you done this? 3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you;(D) they will become traps(E) for you, and their gods will become snares(F) to you.’”
4 When the angel of the Lord had spoken these things to all the Israelites, the people wept aloud,(G)
