About three thousand of the people made the attack, but they fled before the army at Ai, who killed some thirty-six of them. They pursued them from the city gate to the Shebarim, and defeated them on the descent, so that the confidence of the people melted away like water.

So about three thousand went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai,(A) who killed about thirty-six(B) of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(C) and became like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes(D) and fell facedown(E) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(F) The elders of Israel(G) did the same, and sprinkled dust(H) on their heads.
