So about three thousand men went up from among the people there, but they fled from before the men of Ai. The men of Ai struck down thirty-six men and pursued them from the gate to Shebarim. They struck them down on the mountainside, and the hearts of the people melted like water.

They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted in fear(C) and became like water.

Then Joshua tore his clothes(D) and fell facedown(E) to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening.(F) The elders of Israel(G) did the same, and sprinkled dust(H) on their heads.
