5 And the [a]people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a (A)fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them. 6 Then the word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, laid aside his mantle from him, (B)covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the [b]ashes. 7 And he (C)cried out and said,
“In Nineveh by the [c]decree of the king and his nobles[d]: Do not let man, [e]animal, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat, and do not let them drink water.

5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.(A)
6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.(B) 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink.(C)
