Then the Lord sent a powerful wind upon the sea, and there was such a big storm that the ship was about to break up. The sailors became afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the things that were in the ship into the sea so that it would not be so heavy. But Jonah had gone below in the ship and had lain down and fallen asleep. So the captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god. It may be that your god will care about us, and we will not die.”

Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.(A) All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.(B)

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call(C) on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.”(D)
