John 7:33-35 New English Translation

³³Then Jesus said, “I will be with you for only a little while longer,^[a] and then^[b] I am going to the one who sent me. ³⁴You will look for me^[c] but will not find me, and where I am you cannot come.”

³⁵Then the Jewish leaders^[d] said to one another, “Where is he^[e] going to go that we cannot find him?^[f] He is not going to go to the Jewish people dispersed^[g] among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, is he?^[h]

They didn’t realize he spoke of his departure out of the world. This is another example of the author’s use of misunderstanding as a literary device to emphasize a point.
