²⁶ “I baptize with^[a] water,”^(A) John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know him. ²⁷ He is the one coming after me,^[b](B) whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.” ²⁸ All this happened in Bethany^[c] across the Jordan,^(C) where John was baptizing.

The Lamb of God

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(D) who takes away the sin^(E) of the world! ³⁰ This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ ³¹ I didn’t know him,^(F) but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed^(G) to Israel.” ³² And John testified, “I saw the Spirit^(H) descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.^{(I) 33} I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’^(J)

¹³ But the man who was healed did not know who it was,^(A) because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.^[a]

¹⁴ “Even if I testify about myself,” Jesus replied, “my testimony is true, because I know where I came from and where I’m going. But you don’t know where I come from or where I’m going.^(A)

¹⁹ Then they asked him, “Where is your Father?”

“You know neither me nor my Father,”^(A) Jesus answered. “If you knew me, you would also know my Father.”^(B)

⁵⁵ You do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say I don’t know him,^(A) I would be a liar like you. But I do know him,^(B) and I keep his word.

²⁹ We know that God has spoken to Moses. But this man—we don’t know where he’s from.”^(A)

³⁰ “This is an amazing thing!” the man told them. “You don’t know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes.

³⁵ Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer.^(A) Walk while you have the light^(B) so that darkness doesn’t overtake you.^(C) The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going.^(D)

⁷ Jesus answered him, “What I’m doing you don’t realize now, but afterward you will understand.”^(A)

⁵ “Lord,” Thomas^(A) said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”
