18 Truly, truly I say to you, when you were young, you tied your clothes[a] around yourself and walked wherever you wanted. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will tie you up and carry you where you do not want to go.[b] 19 (Now he said this to indicate by what kind of death he would glorify God.) And after he[c] had said this, he said to him, “Follow me!”

20 Peter turned and[d] saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them[e] (who also leaned back on his chest at the dinner and said, “Lord, who is the one betraying you?”)

18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death(A) by which Peter would glorify God.(B) Then he said to him, “Follow me!”(C)
20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved(D) was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”)(E)
