[a]So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. (A)When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths[b] there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.(B)

  2. 20:6–8 Some special feature about the state of the burial cloths caused the beloved disciple to believe. Perhaps the details emphasized that the grave had not been robbed.

So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb.(A) Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in(B) at the strips of linen(C) lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.(D) The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.
