14 How then can I answer Him
or choose my arguments against Him?
15 Even if I were in the right, I could not answer.
I could only beg my Judge for mercy.(A)

13 Be quiet,[a] and I will speak.
Let whatever comes happen to me.
14 Why do I put myself at risk[b]
and take my life in my own hands?
15 Even if He kills me, I will hope in Him.[c]
I will still defend(A) my ways before Him.
16 Yes, this will result in my deliverance,
for no godless person(B) can appear before Him.
17 Pay close attention to my words;
let my declaration ring in your ears.
18 Now then, I have prepared my case;(C)
I know that I am right.
19 Can anyone indict me?
If so, I will be silent and die.

20 Only grant these two things to me, God,
so that I will not have to hide from Your presence:
21 remove Your hand from me,
and do not let Your terror frighten me.(D)
22 Then call, and I will answer,(E)
or I will speak, and You can respond to me.
23 How many iniquities(F) and sins have I committed?[d]
Reveal to me my transgression and sin.
24 Why do You hide Your face
and consider me Your enemy?(G)
25 Will You frighten a wind-driven leaf?
Will You chase after dry straw?
26 For You record bitter accusations against me
and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.
27 You put my feet in the stocks
and stand watch over all my paths,
setting a limit for the soles[e] of my feet.

28 Man wears out like something rotten,
like a moth-eaten garment.(H)

  1. Job 13:15 Or He will surely slay me; I have no hope — / yet I will

Today also my complaint is bitter.[a](A)
His[b] hand is heavy despite my groaning.
If only I knew how to find Him,
so that I could go to His throne.
I would plead my case before Him(B)
and fill my mouth with arguments.
I would learn how[c] He would answer me;
and understand what He would say to me.
Would He prosecute(C) me forcefully?
No, He will certainly pay attention to me.
Then an upright man could reason(D) with Him,
and I would escape from my Judge(E) forever.

If I go east, He is not there,
and if I go west, I cannot perceive Him.(F)
When He is at work to the north, I cannot see Him;
when He turns south, I cannot find Him.
10 Yet He knows the way I have taken;[d]
when He has tested me,(G) I will emerge as pure gold.
11 My feet have followed in His tracks;
I have kept to His way(H) and not turned aside.
12 I have not departed from the commands of His lips;
I have treasured[e] the words(I) of His mouth
more than my daily food.

13 But He is unchangeable; who can oppose Him?
He does what He desires.(J)
14 He will certainly accomplish what He has decreed for me,
and He has many more things like these in mind.[f]
15 Therefore I am terrified(K) in His presence;
when I consider this, I am afraid of Him.
16 God has made my heart faint;(L)
the Almighty has terrified me.
17 Yet I am not destroyed[g] by the darkness,(M)
by the thick darkness that covers my face.
