But Jeremiah answered them, “Tell Zedekiah, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am about to turn(A) against you the weapons of war that are in your hands, which you are using to fight the king of Babylon and the Babylonians[a] who are outside the wall besieging(B) you. And I will gather them inside this city. I myself will fight(C) against you with an outstretched hand(D) and a mighty arm(E) in furious anger and in great wrath. I will strike(F) down those who live in this city—both man and beast—and they will die of a terrible plague.(G) After that, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah(H) king of Judah, his officials and the people in this city who survive the plague,(I) sword and famine, into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon(J) and to their enemies(K) who want to kill them.(L) He will put them to the sword;(M) he will show them no mercy or pity or compassion.’(N)

12 I gave the same message to Zedekiah king of Judah. I said, “Bow your neck under the yoke(A) of the king of Babylon; serve him and his people, and you will live.(B) 13 Why will you and your people die(C) by the sword, famine and plague(D) with which the Lord has threatened any nation that will not serve the king of Babylon? 14 Do not listen(E) to the words of the prophets(F) who say to you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon,’ for they are prophesying lies(G) to you. 15 ‘I have not sent(H) them,’ declares the Lord. ‘They are prophesying lies in my name.(I) Therefore, I will banish you and you will perish,(J) both you and the prophets who prophesy to you.’”

16 Then I said to the priests and all these people, “This is what the Lord says: Do not listen to the prophets who say, ‘Very soon now the articles(K) from the Lord’s house will be brought back from Babylon.’ They are prophesying lies to you. 17 Do not listen(L) to them. Serve the king of Babylon, and you will live.(M) Why should this city become a ruin? 18 If they are prophets and have the word of the Lord, let them plead(N) with the Lord Almighty that the articles remaining in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem not be taken to Babylon. 19 For this is what the Lord Almighty says about the pillars, the bronze Sea,(O) the movable stands and the other articles(P) that are left in this city, 20 which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon did not take away when he carried(Q) Jehoiachin[a](R) son of Jehoiakim king of Judah into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, along with all the nobles of Judah and Jerusalem— 21 yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says about the things that are left in the house of the Lord and in the palace of the king of Judah and in Jerusalem: 22 ‘They will be taken(S) to Babylon and there they will remain until the day(T) I come for them,’ declares the Lord. ‘Then I will bring(U) them back and restore them to this place.’”

Jeremiah Buys a Field

32 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the tenth(A) year of Zedekiah king of Judah, which was the eighteenth(B) year of Nebuchadnezzar. The army of the king of Babylon was then besieging(C) Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was confined(D) in the courtyard of the guard(E) in the royal palace of Judah.

Now Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him there, saying, “Why do you prophesy(F) as you do? You say, ‘This is what the Lord says: I am about to give this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will capture(G) it. Zedekiah(H) king of Judah will not escape(I) the Babylonians[a](J) but will certainly be given into the hands of the king of Babylon, and will speak with him face to face and see him with his own eyes. He will take(K) Zedekiah to Babylon, where he will remain until I deal with him,(L) declares the Lord. If you fight against the Babylonians, you will not succeed.’”(M)

Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire(A) of me, ‘Pharaoh’s army, which has marched(B) out to support you, will go back to its own land, to Egypt.(C) Then the Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture(D) it and burn(E) it down.’

“This is what the Lord says: Do not deceive(F) yourselves, thinking, ‘The Babylonians will surely leave us.’ They will not! 10 Even if you were to defeat the entire Babylonian[a] army that is attacking you and only wounded men were left in their tents, they would come out and burn(G) this city down.”

17 Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “This is what the Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you surrender(A) to the officers of the king of Babylon, your life will be spared and this city will not be burned down; you and your family will live.(B) 18 But if you will not surrender to the officers of the king of Babylon, this city will be given into the hands(C) of the Babylonians and they will burn(D) it down; you yourself will not escape(E) from them.’”

19 King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid(F) of the Jews who have gone over(G) to the Babylonians, for the Babylonians may hand me over to them and they will mistreat me.”

20 “They will not hand you over,” Jeremiah replied. “Obey(H) the Lord by doing what I tell you. Then it will go well(I) with you, and your life(J) will be spared. 21 But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the Lord has revealed to me: 22 All the women(K) left in the palace of the king of Judah will be brought out to the officials of the king of Babylon. Those women will say to you:

“‘They misled you and overcame you—
    those trusted friends(L) of yours.
Your feet are sunk in the mud;(M)
    your friends have deserted you.’

23 “All your wives and children(N) will be brought out to the Babylonians. You yourself will not escape(O) from their hands but will be captured(P) by the king of Babylon; and this city will[a] be burned down.”(Q)

24 Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Do not let anyone know(R) about this conversation, or you may die. 25 If the officials hear that I talked with you, and they come to you and say, ‘Tell us what you said to the king and what the king said to you; do not hide it from us or we will kill you,’ 26 then tell(S) them, ‘I was pleading with the king not to send me back to Jonathan’s house(T) to die there.’”
