39 (A)“Therefore wild beasts shall dwell with hyenas in Babylon, and ostriches shall dwell in her. She shall never again have people, nor be inhabited for all generations. 40 (B)As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbouring cities, declares the Lord, (C)so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her.

41 (D)“Behold, a people comes from the north;
    a mighty nation and many kings
    are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.

39 “So desert creatures(A) and hyenas will live there,
    and there the owl will dwell.
It will never again be inhabited
    or lived in from generation to generation.(B)
40 As I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah(C)
    along with their neighboring towns,”
declares the Lord,
“so no one will live there;
    no people will dwell in it.(D)

41 “Look! An army is coming from the north;(E)
    a great nation and many kings
    are being stirred(F) up from the ends of the earth.(G)
