Weeping as he went, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, set out from Mizpah to meet them. “Come to Gedaliah, son of Ahikam,” he said as he met them. Once they were inside the city, Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, and his men slaughtered them and threw them into the cistern. Ten of them said to Ishmael: “Do not kill us! We have stores of wheat and barley, oil and honey hidden in the field.” So he spared them and did not kill them as he had killed their companions.

Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping(A) as he went. When he met them, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”(B) When they went into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men who were with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.(C) But ten of them said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us! We have wheat and barley, olive oil and honey, hidden in a field.”(D) So he let them alone and did not kill them with the others.
