12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good life let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs?(A) Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it(B) by their good life, by deeds(C) done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition(D) in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.(E)
