66 1 God dwelleth not in Temples made with hands. 3 He despiseth sacrifices done without mercy and faith. 5 God comforteth them that are troubled for his sake. 19 The vocation of the Gentiles. 23 The perpetual Sabbath. 24 The punishment of the wicked is everlasting.

1 Thus saith the Lord, (A)The [a]heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is that house that ye will build unto me? and where is that place of my rest?

2 For all these things hath mine hand made, [b]and all these things have been, saith the Lord: and to him will I look, even to him that is poor, and of [c]a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my words.

3 He that killeth a bullock, is as if he [d]slew a man: he that sacrificeth a sheep, as if he cut off a dog’s neck: he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine’s blood: he that remembereth incense, as if he blessed an idol: yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.

4 Therefore will I [e]choose out their delusions, and I will bring their fear upon them, because I called and none would answer: I speak, and they would not hear: but they did evil in my sight, and chose the things which I would not.

5 Hear the word of the Lord, all ye that tremble at his [f]word, Your brethren that hated you, and cast you out for my Name’s sake, said, Let the Lord be glorified: but he shall appear to your joy, and they shall be ashamed.

6 [g]A voice soundeth from the city, even a voice from the Temple, the voice of the Lord, that recompenseth his enemies fully.

7 Before [h]she travailed, she brought forth: and before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.

8 Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? shall the earth be brought forth in one [i]day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children.

9 Shall I [j]cause to travail, and not bring forth? shall I cause to bring forth, and shall be barren, saith thy God?

10 Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her,

11 That ye may suck, [k]and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolation: that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the brightness of her glory.

12 For thus saith the Lord, behold, I will extend [l]peace over her like a flood, and the glory of the [m]Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye suck, ye shall be [n]born upon her sides, and be joyful upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you, and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

14 And when ye see this, your hearts shall rejoice, and your [o]bones shall flourish like an herb: and the hand of the Lord shall be known among his servants, and his indignation against his enemies.

15 For behold, the Lord will come with fire, and his chariots like a whirlwind, that he may [p]recompense his anger with wrath, and his indignation with the flame of fire.

16 For the Lord will judge with fire, and with his sword all flesh, and the flame of the Lord shall be many.

17 They that sanctify [q]themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst eating [r]swine’s flesh, and such abomination, even the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the Lord.

18 For I will visit their works, and their imaginations, for it shall come that I will gather all nations, and tongues, and they shall come, and see my [s]glory.

19 And I will set a [t]sign among them, and will send those that [u]escape of them unto the nations of [v]Tarshish, [w]Pul, and [x]Lud, and to them that draw the [y]bow, to [z]Tubal and [aa]Javan, isles afar off, that have not heard my fame, neither have seen my glory, and [ab]they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

20 And they shall bring all your [ac]brethren for an offering unto the Lord out of all nations, upon [ad]horses, and in chariots, and in horse litters, and upon mules, and swift beasts, to Jerusalem mine holy Mountain, saith the Lord, as the children of Israel offer in a clean vessel in the House of the Lord.

21 And I will take of them for [ae]Priests, and for Levites, saith the Lord.

22 For as the new [af]heavens, and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name continue.

23 And from month to month, and from Sabbath to Sabbath shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the Lord.

24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the [ag]carcasses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their [ah]worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched, and they shall be an abhorring [ai]unto all flesh.

  1. Isaiah 66:1 My majesty is so great, that it filleth both heaven and earth, and therefore cannot be included in a temple like an idol: condemning hereby their vain confidence, which trusted in the Temple and sacrifices.
  2. Isaiah 66:2 Seeing that both the Temple and the things therein, with the sacrifices, were made and done by his appointment, he showeth that he hath no need thereof, and that he can be without them, Ps. 50:10.
  3. Isaiah 66:2 To him that is humble and pure in heart, which receiveth my doctrine with reverence and fear.
  4. Isaiah 66:3 Because the Jews thought themselves holy by offering of their sacrifices, and in the mean season had neither faith nor repentance, God showeth that he doth no less detest these ceremonies than he doth the sacrifices of the heathen, who offered men, dogs, and swine to their idols, which things were expressly forbidden in the Law.
  5. Isaiah 66:4 I will discover their wickedness and hypocrisy, wherewith they think to blind mine eyes, to all the world.
  6. Isaiah 66:5 He encourageth the faithful by promising to destroy their enemies, which pretended to be as brethren, but were hypocrites, and hated them that feared God.
  7. Isaiah 66:6 The enemies shall shortly hear a more terrible voice, even fire and slaughter, seeing they would not hear the gentle voice of the Prophets, which called them to repentance.
  8. Isaiah 66:7 Meaning, that the restoration of the Church should be so sudden and contrary to all men’s opinions, as when a woman is delivered before she looked for it, and that without pain in travail.
  9. Isaiah 66:8 This shall pass the capacity of man to see such a multitude that shall come up at once, meaning, under the preaching of the Gospel, whereof they that came up out of Babylon were a sign.
  10. Isaiah 66:9 Declaring hereby, that as in his power and providence women travailed and delivered, so he giveth the power to bring forth the Church at his time appointed.
  11. Isaiah 66:11 That is, may rejoice for all the benefits that God bestoweth upon his Church.
  12. Isaiah 66:12 I will give her felicity and prosperity in great abundance.
  13. Isaiah 66:12 Read Isa. 60:16.
  14. Isaiah 66:12 Ye shall be cherished as her dearly beloved children.
  15. Isaiah 66:14 Ye shall have new strength and new beauty.
  16. Isaiah 66:15 This vengeance God began to execute at the destruction of Babylon, and hath ever continued it against the enemies of his Church, and will do till the last day, which shall be the accomplishment thereof.
  17. Isaiah 66:17 Meaning, the hypocrites.
  18. Isaiah 66:17 Whereby are meant them that did maliciously transgress the Law, by eating beasts forbidden, even to the mouse, which nature abhoreth.
  19. Isaiah 66:18 The Gentiles shall be partakers of that glory, which before I showed to the Jews.
  20. Isaiah 66:19 I will make these that I chose, that they perish not with the rest of the infidels: whereby he alludeth to the marking of the posts of his people, whom he preserved, Exod. 12:7.
  21. Isaiah 66:19 I will scatter the rest of the Jews, which escaped destruction, into divers nations.
  22. Isaiah 66:19 That is, Cilicia.

  28. Isaiah 66:19 Meaning, the Apostles, Disciples, and others, which he did first choose of the Jews to preach unto the Gentiles.
  29. Isaiah 66:20 That is, the Gentiles, which by faith shall be made the children of Abraham as you are.
  30. Isaiah 66:20 Whereby he meaneth that no necessary means shall want, when God shall call the Gentiles to the knowledge of the Gospel.
  31. Isaiah 66:21 To wit, of the Gentiles, as he did Luke, Timothy, and Titus first, and others after to preach his word.
  32. Isaiah 66:22 Hereby he signifieth the kingdom of Christ wherein his Church shall be renewed, and whereas before there were appointed seasons to sacrifice, in this there shall be one continual Sabbath, so that all times and seasons shall be meet.
  33. Isaiah 66:24 As he that declared the felicity that shall be within the Church for the comfort of the godly, so doth he show what horrible calamity shall come to the wicked, that are out of the Church.
  34. Isaiah 66:24 Meaning, a continual torment of conscience, which shall ever gnaw them, and never suffer them to be at rest, Mark 9:44.
  35. Isaiah 66:24 This is the just recompense for the wicked, which contemning God and his word, shall be by God’s just judgment abhorred of all his creatures.

Judgment and Hope

66 This is what the Lord says:

“Heaven is my throne,(A)
    and the earth is my footstool.(B)
Where is the house(C) you will build for me?
    Where will my resting place be?
2 Has not my hand made all these things,(D)
    and so they came into being?”
declares the Lord.

“These are the ones I look on with favor:
    those who are humble and contrite in spirit,(E)
    and who tremble at my word.(F)
3 But whoever sacrifices a bull(G)
    is like one who kills a person,
and whoever offers a lamb
    is like one who breaks a dog’s neck;
whoever makes a grain offering
    is like one who presents pig’s(H) blood,
and whoever burns memorial incense(I)
    is like one who worships an idol.
They have chosen their own ways,(J)
    and they delight in their abominations;(K)
4 so I also will choose harsh treatment for them
    and will bring on them what they dread.(L)
For when I called, no one answered,(M)
    when I spoke, no one listened.
They did evil(N) in my sight
    and chose what displeases me.”(O)

5 Hear the word of the Lord,
    you who tremble at his word:(P)
“Your own people who hate(Q) you,
    and exclude you because of my name, have said,
‘Let the Lord be glorified,
    that we may see your joy!’
    Yet they will be put to shame.(R)
6 Hear that uproar from the city,
    hear that noise from the temple!
It is the sound(S) of the Lord
    repaying(T) his enemies all they deserve.

7 “Before she goes into labor,(U)
    she gives birth;
before the pains come upon her,
    she delivers a son.(V)
8 Who has ever heard of such things?
    Who has ever seen(W) things like this?
Can a country be born in a day(X)
    or a nation be brought forth in a moment?
Yet no sooner is Zion in labor
    than she gives birth to her children.(Y)
9 Do I bring to the moment of birth(Z)
    and not give delivery?” says the Lord.
“Do I close up the womb
    when I bring to delivery?” says your God.
10 “Rejoice(AA) with Jerusalem and be glad for her,
    all you who love(AB) her;
rejoice greatly with her,
    all you who mourn(AC) over her.
11 For you will nurse(AD) and be satisfied
    at her comforting breasts;(AE)
you will drink deeply
    and delight in her overflowing abundance.”(AF)

12 For this is what the Lord says:

“I will extend peace(AG) to her like a river,(AH)
    and the wealth(AI) of nations like a flooding stream;
you will nurse and be carried(AJ) on her arm
    and dandled on her knees.
13 As a mother comforts her child,(AK)
    so will I comfort(AL) you;
    and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”

14 When you see this, your heart will rejoice(AM)
    and you will flourish(AN) like grass;
the hand(AO) of the Lord will be made known to his servants,(AP)
    but his fury(AQ) will be shown to his foes.
15 See, the Lord is coming with fire,(AR)
    and his chariots(AS) are like a whirlwind;(AT)
he will bring down his anger with fury,
    and his rebuke(AU) with flames of fire.
16 For with fire(AV) and with his sword(AW)
    the Lord will execute judgment(AX) on all people,
    and many will be those slain(AY) by the Lord.

17 “Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,(AZ) following one who is among those who eat the flesh of pigs,(BA) rats(BB) and other unclean things—they will meet their end(BC) together with the one they follow,” declares the Lord.

18 “And I, because of what they have planned and done,(BD) am about to come[a] and gather the people of all nations(BE) and languages, and they will come and see my glory.(BF)

19 “I will set a sign(BG) among them, and I will send some of those who survive(BH) to the nations—to Tarshish,(BI) to the Libyans[b] and Lydians(BJ) (famous as archers), to Tubal(BK) and Greece,(BL) and to the distant islands(BM) that have not heard of my fame or seen my glory.(BN) They will proclaim my glory among the nations. 20 And they will bring(BO) all your people, from all the nations, to my holy mountain(BP) in Jerusalem as an offering to the Lord—on horses, in chariots and wagons, and on mules and camels,”(BQ) says the Lord. “They will bring them, as the Israelites bring their grain offerings, to the temple of the Lord in ceremonially clean vessels.(BR) 21 And I will select some of them also to be priests(BS) and Levites,” says the Lord.

22 “As the new heavens and the new earth(BT) that I make will endure before me,” declares the Lord, “so will your name and descendants endure.(BU) 23 From one New Moon to another and from one Sabbath(BV) to another, all mankind will come and bow down(BW) before me,” says the Lord. 24 “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies(BX) of those who rebelled(BY) against me; the worms(BZ) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,(CA) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”
