⁵ You welcome the one who joyfully does what is right;
they remember you in your ways.
But we have sinned, and you were angry.
How can we be saved if we remain in our sins?^[a]

²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame;
let our disgrace cover us.^(A)

both we and our ancestors,
from the time of our youth even to this day.^(C)
We have not obeyed the Lord our God.”

¹⁴ Why are we just sitting here?
Gather together; let’s enter the fortified cities
and perish there,^[a]
for the Lord our God has destroyed^[b] us.
He has given us poisoned water to drink,^(A)
because we have sinned against the Lord.^(B)

²⁰ We acknowledge our wickedness, Lord,
the iniquity of our ancestors;^(A)
