¹² They have harps and lyres at their banquets,
    pipes^(A) and timbrels^(B) and wine,
but they have no regard^(C) for the deeds of the Lord,
    no respect for the work of his hands.^(D)

²⁴ Therefore, as tongues of fire^(A) lick up straw^(B)
    and as dry grass sinks down in the flames,
so their roots will decay^(C)
    and their flowers blow away like dust;^(D)
for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty
    and spurned the word^(E) of the Holy One^(F) of Israel.

Go, swift messengers,
to a people tall and smooth-skinned,^(C)
    to a people feared far and wide,
an aggressive^(D) nation of strange speech,
    whose land is divided by rivers.^(E)

¹¹ You built a reservoir between the two walls^(A)
    for the water of the Old Pool,^(B)
but you did not look to the One who made it,
    or have regard^(C) for the One who planned^(D) it long ago.
