Isaiah 42:3-5

Common English Bible

³He won’t break a bruised reed;
    he won’t extinguish a faint wick,
    but he will surely bring justice.
⁴He won’t be extinguished or broken
    until he has established justice in the land.
The coastlands await his teaching.

⁵God the Lord says—
    the one who created the heavens,
    the one who stretched them out,
    the one who spread out the earth and its offspring,
    the one who gave breath to its people
    and life to those who walk on it—

New International Version

³A bruised reed^(A) he will not break,^(B)
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.^(C)
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;^(D)
⁴    he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice^(E) on earth.
    In his teaching^(F) the islands^(G) will put their hope.”^(H)

⁵This is what God the Lord says—
the Creator of the heavens,^(I) who stretches them out,
    who spreads out the earth^(J) with all that springs from it,^(K)
    who gives breath^(L) to its people,
