Israel will be as abandoned as the harvested grain fields in the valley of Rephaim. Oh, a very few of her people will be left, just as a few stray olives are left on the trees when the harvest is ended, two or three in the highest branches, four or five out on the tips of the limbs. That is how it will be in Damascus and Israel—stripped bare of people except for a few of the poor who remain.

Then at last they will think of God their Creator and have respect for the Holy One of Israel.

It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,
    gathering(A) the grain in their arms—
as when someone gleans heads of grain(B)
    in the Valley of Rephaim.(C)
Yet some gleanings will remain,(D)
    as when an olive tree is beaten,(E)
leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,
    four or five on the fruitful boughs,”
declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

In that day(F) people will look(G) to their Maker(H)
    and turn their eyes to the Holy One(I) of Israel.
