We have heard of Moab’s pride(A)
how very proud he is—
his haughtiness, his pride, his arrogance,
and his empty boasting.
Therefore let Moab wail;
let every one of them wail for Moab.
Mourn, you who are completely devastated,
for the raisin cakes(B) of Kir-hareseth.(C)
For Heshbon’s terraced vineyards
and the grapevines of Sibmah have withered.
The rulers of the nations
have trampled its choice vines
that reached as far as Jazer(D)
and spread to the desert.
Their shoots spread out
and reached the Dead Sea.(E)
So I join with Jazer
to weep for the vines of Sibmah;
I drench Heshbon and Elealeh with my tears.
Triumphant shouts have fallen silent[a]
over your summer fruit and your harvest.
10 Joy and rejoicing(F) have been removed from the orchard;
no one is singing or shouting for joy in the vineyards.(G)
No one tramples grapes[b] in the winepresses.
I have put an end to the shouting.
11 Therefore I moan like the sound of a lyre for Moab,(H)
as does my innermost being for Kir-heres.

  1. Isaiah 16:8 Probably the Dead Sea

Therefore, as I live—
this is the declaration of the Lord of Hosts,
the God of Israel—
Moab will be like Sodom
and the Ammonites like Gomorrah(A)
a place overgrown with weeds,
a salt pit, and a perpetual wasteland.
The remnant of My people will plunder them;
the remainder of My nation will dispossess them.
10 This is what they get for their pride,
because they have taunted and acted arrogantly(B)
against the people of the Lord of Hosts.
