Wedi hynny yr oedd gŵyl yr Iddewon; a’r Iesu a aeth i fyny i Jerwsalem. Ac y mae yn Jerwsalem, wrth farchnad y defaid, lyn a elwir yn Hebraeg, Bethesda, ac iddo bum porth; Yn y rhai y gorweddai lliaws mawr o rai cleifion, deillion, cloffion, gwywedigion, yn disgwyl am gynhyrfiad y dwfr. Canys angel oedd ar amserau yn disgyn i’r llyn, ac yn cynhyrfu’r dwfr: yna yr hwn a elai i mewn yn gyntaf ar ôl cynhyrfu’r dwfr, a âi yn iach o ba glefyd bynnag a fyddai arno. Ac yr oedd rhyw ddyn yno, yr hwn a fuasai glaf namyn dwy flynedd deugain. Yr Iesu, pan welodd hwn yn gorwedd, a gwybod ei fod ef felly yn hir o amser bellach, a ddywedodd wrtho, A fynni di dy wneuthur yn iach? Y claf a atebodd iddo, Arglwydd, nid oes gennyf ddyn i’m bwrw i’r llyn, pan gynhyrfer y dwfr: ond tra fyddwyf fi yn dyfod, arall a ddisgyn o’m blaen i. Yr Iesu a ddywedodd wrtho, Cyfod cymer dy wely i fyny, a rhodia. Ac yn ebrwydd y gwnaed y dyn yn iach; ac efe a gododd ei wely, ac a rodiodd. A’r Saboth oedd y diwrnod hwnnw.

10 Am hynny yr Iddewon a ddywedasant wrth yr hwn a wnaethid yn iach, Y Saboth yw hi: nid cyfreithlon i ti godi dy wely. 11 Efe a atebodd iddynt, Yr hwn a’m gwnaeth i yn iach, efe a ddywedodd wrthyf, Cyfod dy wely, a rhodia. 12 Yna hwy a ofynasant iddo, Pwy yw’r dyn a ddywedodd wrthyt ti, Cyfod dy wely, a rhodia? 13 A’r hwn a iachasid ni wyddai pwy oedd efe: canys yr Iesu a giliasai o’r dyrfa oedd yn y fan honno. 14 Wedi hynny yr Iesu a’i cafodd ef yn y deml, ac a ddywedodd wrtho, Wele, ti a wnaethpwyd yn iach: na phecha mwyach, rhag digwydd i ti beth a fyddo gwaeth. 15 Y dyn a aeth ymaith, ac a fynegodd i’r Iddewon, mai’r Iesu oedd yr hwn a’i gwnaethai ef yn iach. 16 Ac am hynny yr Iddewon a erlidiasant yr Iesu, ac a geisiasant ei ladd ef, oblegid iddo wneuthur y pethau hyn ar y Saboth.

17 Ond yr Iesu a’u hatebodd hwynt, Y mae fy Nhad yn gweithio hyd yn hyn, ac yr ydwyf finnau yn gweithio. 18 Am hyn gan hynny yr Iddewon a geisiasant yn fwy ei ladd ef, oblegid nid yn unig iddo dorri’r Saboth, ond hefyd iddo ddywedyd fod Duw yn Dad iddo, gan ei wneuthur ei hun yn gystal â Duw. 19 Yna yr Iesu a atebodd ac a ddywedodd wrthynt, Yn wir, yn wir, meddaf i chwi, Ni ddichon y Mab wneuthur dim ohono ei hunan, eithr yr hyn a welo efe y Tad yn ei wneuthur: canys beth bynnag y mae efe yn ei wneuthur, hynny hefyd y mae’r Mab yr un ffunud yn ei wneuthur. 20 Canys y Tad sydd yn caru’r Mab, ac yn dangos iddo yr hyn oll y mae efe yn ei wneuthur: ac efe a ddengys iddo ef weithredoedd mwy na’r rhai hyn, fel y rhyfeddoch chwi. 21 Oblegid megis y mae’r Tad yn cyfodi’r rhai meirw, ac yn eu bywhau; felly hefyd y mae’r Mab yn bywhau y rhai a fynno. 22 Canys y Tad nid yw yn barnu neb; eithr efe a roddes bob barn i’r Mab: 23 Fel yr anrhydeddai pawb y Mab, fel y maent yn anrhydeddu’r Tad. Yr hwn nid yw yn anrhydeddu’r Mab, nid yw yn anrhydeddu’r Tad yr hwn a’i hanfonodd ef. 24 Yn wir, yn wir, meddaf i chwi, Y neb sydd yn gwrando fy ngair i, ac yn credu i’r hwn a’m hanfonodd i, a gaiff fywyd tragwyddol, ac ni ddaw i farn; eithr efe a aeth trwodd o farwolaeth i fywyd. 25 Yn wir, yn wir, meddaf i chwi, Y mae’r awr yn dyfod, ac yn awr y mae, pan glywo’r meirw lef Mab Duw: a’r rhai a glywant, a fyddant byw. 26 Canys megis y mae gan y Tad fywyd ynddo ei hunan, felly y rhoddes efe i’r Mab hefyd fod ganddo fywyd ynddo ei hun; 27 Ac a roddes awdurdod iddo i wneuthur barn hefyd, oherwydd ei fod yn Fab dyn. 28 Na ryfeddwch am hyn: canys y mae’r awr yn dyfod, yn yr hon y caiff pawb a’r sydd yn y beddau glywed ei leferydd ef: 29 A hwy a ddeuant allan: y rhai a wnaethant dda, i atgyfodiad bywyd; ond y rhai a wnaethant ddrwg, i atgyfodiad barn. 30 Ni allaf fi wneuthur dim ohonof fy hunan; fel yr ydwyf yn clywed, yr ydwyf yn barnu: a’m barn i sydd gyfiawn; canys nid ydwyf yn ceisio fy ewyllys fy hunan, ond ewyllys y Tad yr hwn a’m hanfonodd i. 31 Os ydwyf fi yn tystiolaethu amdanaf fy hunan, nid yw fy nhystiolaeth i wir.

32 Arall sydd yn tystiolaethu amdanaf fi; ac mi a wn mai gwir yw’r dystiolaeth y mae efe yn ei thystiolaethu amdanaf fi. 33 Chwychwi a anfonasoch at Ioan, ac efe a ddug dystiolaeth i’r gwirionedd. 34 Ond myfi nid ydwyf yn derbyn tystiolaeth gan ddyn: eithr y pethau hyn yr ydwyf yn eu dywedyd, fel y gwareder chwi. 35 Efe oedd gannwyll yn llosgi, ac yn goleuo; a chwithau oeddech ewyllysgar i orfoleddu dros amser yn ei oleuni ef.

36 Ond y mae gennyf fi dystiolaeth fwy nag Ioan: canys y gweithredoedd a roddes y Tad i mi i’w gorffen, y gweithredoedd hynny y rhai yr ydwyf fi yn eu gwneuthur, sydd yn tystiolaethu amdanaf fi, mai’r Tad a’m hanfonodd i. 37 A’r Tad, yr hwn a’m hanfonodd i, efe a dystiolaethodd amdanaf fi. Ond ni chlywsoch chwi ei lais ef un amser, ac ni welsoch ei wedd ef. 38 Ac nid oes gennych chwi mo’i air ef yn aros ynoch: canys yr hwn a anfonodd efe, hwnnw nid ydych chwi yn credu iddo.

39 Chwiliwch yr ysgrythurau: canys ynddynt hwy yr ydych chwi yn meddwl cael bywyd tragwyddol: a hwynt‐hwy yw’r rhai sydd yn tystiolaethu amdanaf fi. 40 Ond ni fynnwch chwi ddyfod ataf fi, fel y caffoch fywyd. 41 Nid ydwyf fi yn derbyn gogoniant oddi wrth ddynion. 42 Ond myfi a’ch adwaen chwi, nad oes gennych gariad Duw ynoch. 43 Myfi a ddeuthum yn enw fy Nhad, ac nid ydych yn fy nerbyn i: os arall a ddaw yn ei enw ei hun, hwnnw a dderbyniwch. 44 Pa fodd y gellwch chwi gredu, y rhai ydych yn derbyn gogoniant gan eich gilydd, ac heb geisio’r gogoniant sydd oddi wrth Dduw yn unig? 45 Na thybiwch y cyhuddaf fi chwi wrth y Tad: y mae a’ch cyhudda chwi, sef Moses, yn yr hwn yr ydych yn gobeithio. 46 Canys pe credasech chwi i Moses, chwi a gredasech i minnau: oblegid amdanaf fi yr ysgrifennodd efe. 47 Ond os chwi ni chredwch i’w ysgrifeniadau ef, pa fodd y credwch i’m geiriau i?

The Healing at the Pool

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate(A) a pool, which in Aramaic(B) is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. [4] [b] One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”(C) At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.

The day on which this took place was a Sabbath,(D) 10 and so the Jewish leaders(E) said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”(F)

11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’

12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”

13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.

14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning(G) or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders(H) that it was Jesus who had made him well.

The Authority of the Son

16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him. 17 In his defense Jesus said to them, “My Father(I) is always at his work(J) to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him;(K) not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.(L)

19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself;(M) he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son(N) and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,(O) so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,(P) even so the Son gives life(Q) to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,(R) 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.(S)

24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me(T) has eternal life(U) and will not be judged(V) but has crossed over from death to life.(W) 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come(X) when the dead will hear(Y) the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life(Z) in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge(AA) because he is the Son of Man.

28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming(AB) when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.(AC) 30 By myself I can do nothing;(AD) I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just,(AE) for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.(AF)

Testimonies About Jesus

31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.(AG) 32 There is another who testifies in my favor,(AH) and I know that his testimony about me is true.

33 “You have sent to John and he has testified(AI) to the truth. 34 Not that I accept human testimony;(AJ) but I mention it that you may be saved.(AK) 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light,(AL) and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.(AM) For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing(AN)—testify that the Father has sent me.(AO) 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.(AP) You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,(AQ) 38 nor does his word dwell in you,(AR) for you do not believe(AS) the one he sent.(AT) 39 You study[c] the Scriptures(AU) diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life.(AV) These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,(AW) 40 yet you refuse to come to me(AX) to have life.

41 “I do not accept glory from human beings,(AY) 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. 43 I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[d]?(AZ)

45 “But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(BA) on whom your hopes are set.(BB) 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.(BC) 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”(BD)
