¹⁶ They turn to that which does not profit;^[a]
    they have become like a defective bow;
their officials shall fall by the sword
    because of the rage of their tongue.
So much for their babbling in the land of Egypt.^(A)

⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge!
    Because you have rejected knowledge,
    I reject you from being a priest to me;
and since you have forgotten the law of your God,
    I also will forget your children.^(A)

¹¹     prostitution.

Wine and new wine
    take away the understanding.^(A)

¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute themselves
    nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery,
for the men themselves go aside with prostitutes
    and sacrifice with female attendants;
thus a people without understanding comes to ruin.^(A)

¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness
    and Judah his wound,
then Ephraim went to Assyria
    and sent to the great king.^[a]
But he is not able to cure you
    or heal your wound.^(A)

⁹ For they have gone up to Assyria,
    a wild ass wandering alone;
    Ephraim has bargained for lovers.^(A)

¹¹ They shall come trembling like birds from Egypt
    and like doves from the land of Assyria,
    and I will return them to their homes, says the Lord.^(A)
