[b] 16 For people swear by someone greater; and the oath, as confirmation, is an end to all their disputing. 17 In the same way God, determining to point out more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchanging nature of His purpose, guaranteed it with an oath.

16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.(B) 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging(C) nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised,(D) he confirmed it with an oath.
