³ Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was ^(A)the son of his old age. Also he ^(B)made him a tunic of many colors.

²² Now Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and had them sit in the place of honor among those who were invited; there were about thirty persons. ²³ And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it apart.’ ” ²⁴ So the cook took up ^(A)the thigh with its upper part and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here it is, what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat; for until this time it has been kept for you, since I said I invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

³⁰ And as for his ^[a]provisions, there was a ^[b]regular ration given him by the king, a portion for each day, all the days of his life.

¹⁹ Therefore the Jews of the villages who dwelt in the unwalled towns celebrated the fourteenth day of the month of Adar ^(A)with gladness and feasting, ^(B)as a holiday, and for ^(C)sending presents to one another.

⁹ “Then I washed you in water; yes, I thoroughly washed off your blood, and I anointed you with oil. ¹⁰ I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals of ^[a]badger skin; I clothed you with fine linen and covered you with silk. ¹¹ I adorned you with ornaments, ^(A)put bracelets on your wrists, ^(B)and a chain on your neck. ¹² And I put a ^[b]jewel in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head. ¹³ Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. ^(C)You ate pastry of fine flour, honey, and oil. You were exceedingly ^(D)beautiful, and succeeded to royalty.

⁵ And the king appointed for them a daily provision of the king’s delicacies and of the wine which he drank, and three years of training for them, so that at the end of that time they might ^(A)serve before the king.
