Genesis 16:4-6  New English Translation

4 He slept with[a] Hagar, and she became pregnant.[b] Once Hagar realized she was pregnant, she despised Sarai.[c] 5 Then Sarai said to Abram, “You have brought this wrong on me![d] I gave my servant into your embrace,[e] but when she realized[f] that she was pregnant, she despised me.[g] May the Lord judge between you and me!”[h]

6 Abram said to Sarai, “Since your[i] servant is under your authority,[j] do to her whatever you think best.”[k] Then Sarai treated Hagar[l] harshly,[m] so she ran away from Sarai.[n]

  3. Genesis 16:4 tn Heb “and she saw that she was pregnant and her mistress was despised in her eyes.” The Hebrew verb קָלַל (qalal) means “to despise, to treat lightly, to treat with contempt.” In Hagar’s opinion Sarai had been demoted.

Here she expects to be vindicated by the Lord who will prove Abram responsible. A colloquial rendering might be, “God will get you for this.” It may mean that she thought Abram had encouraged the servant girl in her elevated status.
