⁶ Abram ^(A)passed through the land to the place of Shechem, ^(B)as far as ^[a]the terebinth tree of Moreh. ^(C)And the Canaanites were then in the land.

⁷ And there was ^(A)strife between the herdsmen of Abram’s livestock and the herdsmen of Lot’s livestock. ^(B)The Canaanites and the Perizzites then dwelt in the land.

¹¹ And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a deep mourning of the Egyptians.” Therefore its name was called ^[a]Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

The Law of the Firstborn

¹¹ “And it shall be, when the Lord ^(A)brings you into the land of the ^(B)Canaanites, as He swore to you and your fathers, and gives it to you,

^29 (A)The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”

²⁵ Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valley; tomorrow turn and ^(A)move out into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.”

³ And the Lord listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called ^[a]Hormah.

⁴⁰ Now ^(A)the king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.

⁷ Turn and take your journey, and go to the mountains of the Amorites, to all the neighboring places in the ^[a]plain, in the mountains and in the lowland, in the South and on the seacoast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates.

The Continuing Conquest of Canaan^(A)

1 Now after the ^(B)death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel ^(C)asked the Lord, saying, “Who shall be first to go up for us against the ^(D)Canaanites to fight against them?”
