¹⁷ “I’ll send you a young goat^(A) from my flock,” he said.

“Will you give me something as a pledge^(B) until you send it?” she asked.

¹⁸ He said, “What pledge should I give you?”

“Your seal^(C) and its cord, and the staff^(D) in your hand,” she answered. So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.^(E)

²⁰ Meanwhile Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite^(A) in order to get his pledge^(B) back from the woman, but he did not find her.

²² set his seal^(A) of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.^(B)

⁵ Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.^(A)
