34 A Dina merch Lea, yr hon a ymddygasai hi i Jacob, a aeth allan i weled merched y wlad. A Sichem mab Hemor yr Hefiad, tywysog y wlad, a’i canfu hi, ac a’i cymerth hi, ac a orweddodd gyda hi, ac a’i treisiodd. A’i enaid ef a lynodd wrth Dina merch Jacob; ie, efe a hoffodd y llances, ac a ddywedodd wrth fodd calon y llances. Sichem hefyd a lefarodd wrth Hemor ei dad, gan ddywedyd, Cymer y llances hon yn wraig i mi. A Jacob a glybu i Sichem halogi Dina ei ferch: (a’i feibion ef oedd gyda’i anifeiliaid ef yn y maes); a Jacob a dawodd â sôn hyd oni ddaethant hwy adref.

A Hemor tad Sichem a aeth allan at Jacob, i ymddiddan ag ef. A meibion Jacob a ddaethant o’r maes, wedi clywed ohonynt; a’r gwŷr a ymofidiasant, a digiasant yn ddirfawr, oblegid gwneuthur o Sichem ffolineb yn Israel, gan orwedd gyda merch Jacob; canys ni ddylesid gwneuthur felly. A Hemor a ymddiddanodd â hwynt, gan ddywedyd, Glynu a wnaeth enaid Sichem fy mab i wrth eich merch chwi: rhoddwch hi, atolwg, yn wraig iddo ef. Ac ymgyfathrechwch â ni; rhoddwch eich merched chwi i ni, a chymerwch ein merched ni i chwithau. 10 A chwi a gewch breswylio gyda ni, a’r wlad fydd o’ch blaen chwi: trigwch a negeseuwch ynddi, a cheisiwch feddiannau ynddi. 11 Sichem hefyd a ddywedodd wrth ei thad hi, ac wrth ei brodyr, Caffwyf ffafr yn eich golwg, a’r hyn a ddywedoch wrthyf a roddaf. 12 Gosodwch arnaf fi ddirfawr gynhysgaeth a rhodd, a mi a roddaf fel y dywedoch wrthyf: rhoddwch chwithau y llances i mi yn wraig. 13 A meibion Jacob a atebasant Sichem, a Hemor ei dad ef, yn dwyllodrus, ac a ddywedasant, oherwydd iddo ef halogi Dina eu chwaer hwynt; 14 Ac a ddywedasant wrthynt, Ni allwn wneuthur y peth hyn, gan roddi ein chwaer i ŵr dienwaededig: oblegid gwarthrudd yw hynny i ni. 15 Ond yn hyn y cytunwn â chwi: Os byddwch fel nyni, gan enwaedu pob gwryw i chwi; 16 Yna y rhoddwn ein merched ni i chwi, ac y cymerwn eich merched chwithau i ninnau, a ni a gyd‐drigwn â chwi, a ni a fyddwn yn un bobl. 17 Ond oni wrandewch arnom ni i’ch enwaedu; yna y cymerwn ein merch, ac a awn ymaith. 18 A’u geiriau hwynt oedd dda yng ngolwg Hemor, ac yng ngolwg Sichem mab Hemor. 19 Ac nid oedodd y llanc wneuthur y peth, oblegid efe a roddasai serch ar ferch Jacob: ac yr oedd efe yn anrhydeddusach na holl dŷ ei dad.

20 A Hemor, a Sichem ei fab ef, a aethant i borth eu dinas, ac a lefarasant wrth eu dinasyddion, gan ddywedyd, 21 Y gwŷr hyn heddychol ŷnt hwy gyda ni; trigant hwythau yn y wlad, a gwnânt eu negesau ynddi; a’r wlad, wele, sydd ddigon eang iddynt hwy: cymerwn eu merched hwynt i ni yn wragedd, a rhoddwn ein merched ninnau iddynt hwy. 22 Ond yn hyn y cytuna y dynion â ni, i drigo gyda ni, ar fod yn un bobl, os enwaedir pob gwryw i ni, fel y maent hwy yn enwaededig. 23 Eu hanifeiliaid hwynt, a’u cyfoeth hwynt, a’u holl ysgrubliaid hwynt, onid eiddom ni fyddant hwy? yn unig cytunwn â hwynt, a hwy a drigant gyda ni. 24 Ac ar Hemor, ac ar Sichem ei fab ef, y gwrandawodd pawb a’r a oedd yn dyfod allan o borth ei ddinas ef: ac enwaedwyd pob gwryw, sef y rhai oll oedd yn dyfod allan o borth ei ddinas ef.

25 A bu ar y trydydd dydd, pan oeddynt hwy yn ddolurus, gymryd o ddau o feibion Jacob, Simeon a Lefi, brodyr Dina, bob un ei gleddyf, a dyfod ar y ddinas yn hyderus, a lladd pob gwryw. 26 Lladdasant hefyd Hemor a Sichem ei fab â min y cleddyf; a chymerasant Dina o dŷ Sichem, ac a aethant allan. 27 Meibion Jacob a ddaethant ar y lladdedigion, ac a ysbeiliasant y ddinas, am halogi ohonynt eu chwaer hwynt. 28 Cymerasant eu defaid hwynt, a’u gwartheg, a’u hasynnod hwynt, a’r hyn oedd yn y ddinas, a’r hyn oedd yn y maes, 29 A’u holl gyfoeth hwynt; a’u holl rai bychain, a’u gwragedd, a gaethgludasant hwy; ac ysbeiliasant yr hyn oll oedd yn y tai. 30 A Jacob a ddywedodd wrth Simeon a Lefi, Trallodasoch fi, gan beri i mi fod yn ffiaidd gan breswylwyr y wlad, gan y Canaaneaid a’r Pheresiaid: a minnau yn ychydig o nifer, hwy a ymgasglant yn fy erbyn, a thrawant fi: felly y difethir fi, mi a’m tŷ. 31 Hwythau a atebasant, Ai megis putain y gwnâi efe ein chwaer ni?

Dinah and the Shechemites

34 Now Dinah,(A) the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land. When Shechem(B) son of Hamor(C) the Hivite,(D) the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and raped her.(E) His heart was drawn to Dinah(F) daughter of Jacob;(G) he loved(H) the young woman and spoke tenderly(I) to her. And Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this girl as my wife.”(J)

When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled,(K) his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he did nothing about it until they came home.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.(L) Meanwhile, Jacob’s sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were shocked(M) and furious,(N) because Shechem had done an outrageous thing in[a] Israel(O) by sleeping with Jacob’s daughter—a thing that should not be done.(P)

But Hamor said to them, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.(Q) Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.(R) 10 You can settle among us;(S) the land is open to you.(T) Live in it, trade[b] in it,(U) and acquire property in it.(V)

11 Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes,(W) and I will give you whatever you ask. 12 Make the price for the bride(X) and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I’ll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the young woman as my wife.”

13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled,(Y) Jacob’s sons replied deceitfully(Z) as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor. 14 They said to them, “We can’t do such a thing; we can’t give our sister to a man who is not circumcised.(AA) That would be a disgrace to us. 15 We will enter into an agreement with you on one condition(AB) only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.(AC) 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves.(AD) We’ll settle among you and become one people with you.(AE) 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we’ll take our sister and go.”

18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem. 19 The young man, who was the most honored(AF) of all his father’s family, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter.(AG) 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city(AH) to speak to the men of their city. 21 “These men are friendly toward us,” they said. “Let them live in our land and trade in it;(AI) the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.(AJ) 22 But the men will agree to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised,(AK) as they themselves are. 23 Won’t their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours?(AL) So let us agree to their terms, and they will settle among us.(AM)

24 All the men who went out of the city gate(AN) agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.

25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain,(AO) two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon(AP) and Levi,(AQ) Dinah’s brothers, took their swords(AR) and attacked the unsuspecting city,(AS) killing every male.(AT) 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword(AU) and took Dinah(AV) from Shechem’s house and left. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city(AW) where[c] their sister had been defiled.(AX) 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys(AY) and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.(AZ) 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children,(BA) taking as plunder(BB) everything in the houses.(BC)

30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble(BD) on me by making me obnoxious(BE) to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land.(BF) We are few in number,(BG) and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”

31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?(BH)
