38 He set the rods that he had peeled in front of the flocks in the troughs, that is, the watering-places, where the flocks came to drink. And since they bred when they came to drink, 39 the flocks bred in front of the rods, and so the flocks produced young that were striped, speckled, and spotted. 40 Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the striped and the completely black animals in the flock of Laban; and he put his own droves apart, and did not put them with Laban’s flock.

38 Then he placed the peeled branches(A) in all the watering troughs,(B) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(C) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(D) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(E) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(F) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals.
