Genesis 3:17-24

New International Version

¹⁷To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’^(A)

“Cursed^(B) is the ground^(C) because of you;
    through painful toil^(D) you will eat food from it
    all the days of your life.^(E)
¹⁸It will produce thorns and thistles^(F) for you,
    and you will eat the plants of the field.^(G)
¹⁹By the sweat of your brow^(H)
    you will eat your food^(I)
until you return to the ground,
    since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
    and to dust you will return.”^(J)

²⁰Adam^[a] named his wife Eve,^[b]^(K) because she would become the mother of all the living.

²¹The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.^(L) ²²And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us,^(M) knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life^(N) and eat, and live forever.” ²³So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden^(O) to work the ground^(P) from which he had been taken. ²⁴After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side^[c] of the Garden of Eden^(Q) cherubim^(R) and a flaming sword^(S) flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.^(T)

New International Version

²²Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.^(A) ²³The whole land will be a burning waste^(B) of salt^(C) and sulfur—nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah,^(D) Admah and Zeboyim, which the Lord overthrew in fierce anger.^(E) ²⁴All the nations will ask: “Why has the Lord done this to this land?^(F) Why this fierce, burning anger?”

²⁵And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt.^(G) ²⁶They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. ²⁷Therefore the Lord’s anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book.^(H) ²⁸In furious anger and in great wrath^(I) the Lord uprooted^(J) them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now.”

²⁹The secret things belong to the Lord our God,^(K) but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.^(L)
