⁶ Then God said to him in the dream, “Indeed, I know that in the integrity of your heart you have done this, and I also ^[a](A)held you back from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.

¹¹ Then ^(A)the angel of God said to me in the dream, ‘Jacob,’ and I said, ‘Here I am.’

⁶ and He said,

²⁰ But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the ^[a]Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “^(A)Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for ^[b]the One who has been ^[c]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

¹² And having been ^(A)warned ^(B)in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi departed for their own country by another way.

The Flight to Egypt

¹³ Now when they had departed, behold, an ^(C)angel of the ^[a]Lord *^(D)appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”

¹⁴ So ^[b]Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and departed for Egypt. ¹⁵ And he ^[c]remained there until the death of Herod, in order that what had been spoken by the ^[d]Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, “^(E)Out of Egypt I called ^(F)My Son.”

Herod Slaughters Children

¹⁶ Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by ^(G)the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and ^(H)slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully determined from the magi. ¹⁷ Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,

¹⁹ But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the ^[e]Lord *^(J)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, ²⁰ “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.” ²¹ So ^[f]Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel. ²² But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being ^(K)warned by God in a dream, he departed for the district of Galilee, ²³ and came and lived in a city called ^(L)Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets would be fulfilled: “He shall be called a ^(M)Nazarene.”

¹⁹ But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the ^[a]Lord *^(A)appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
