¹³ Then the Lord said to Abram,^(A) “Know this for certain: Your offspring will be foreigners^(B) in a land that does not belong to them; they will be enslaved and oppressed^[a] 400 years.^(C)

Moses in Midian

¹¹ Years later,^[a] after Moses had grown up, he went out to his own people^[b] and observed their forced labor.^(A) He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.

⁷ Then the Lord said, “I have observed the misery of My people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out^(A) because of their oppressors, and I know about their sufferings.

⁴ The king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why are you causing the people to neglect their work? Get to your work!” ⁵ Pharaoh also said, “Look, the people of the land are so numerous, and you would stop them from working.”^(A)
